Abandoned sacred spot:


Papanashanam (also called Papavinasanam) is a holy place in Tirupathi. Papa (sin), Nashanam (destruction) and hence the literal meaning.This place that you are now seeing is an abandoned sacred spot in Tirumala. The pond of Papanashanam has been restricted ever since a new place has been constructed for the devotees to visit. A short trek of about 25 to 30 minutes takes you to this place, which is now restricted.

Papa Nashanam, the literal translation to the phrase ‘Destruction of Sins’ is a holy place in Tirupathi, India. Devotees visit here in lieu of the belief that their sins shall be washed away. A very famous regional tourist spot, this place is now in official restriction because of the construction of a dam. The waters of the Papanashanam river are used for the sustenance on the hill town of Tirumala.


There is a pond believed to be sacred and when bathed in it, one shall be redeemed of the sins. However, this pond is now not in access to the public since there is a dam being constructed and the water from this water body is supplied to the general needs of the public. Due to this reason, a new place with modern shower system has been constructed for the devotees to visit.


The waters of Papanashanam, considered as holy and believed to contain powers that could wash away one’s sins are one of the seven sources of water bodies for sustenance on the hill town of Tirumala.
